Pyrrhotite - Pyrrhotite

Pyrrhotite - Pyrrhotite

A type of iron sulfide mineral. Strictly speaking, it is a general name that includes at least six minerals with different chemical compositions that are mineralogically independent. It occurs in contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), copper-bearing iron sulfide deposits, intermediate to deep hydrothermal vein deposits, and normal magmatic deposits, coexisting with various sulfide minerals. It is considered to be a product of relatively high temperatures and reducing environments, but those with less iron compared to sulfur tend to be formed at lower temperatures and have stronger magnetic properties. Its idiomorph is hexagonal plate-like or short columnar. The main production areas in Japan are Kamaishi Mine (closed) in Iwate Prefecture, Chichibu Mine (closed) in Saitama Prefecture, Hitachi Mine (closed) in Ibaraki Prefecture, and Besshi Copper Mine (closed) in Ehime Prefecture. It is used by first burning it to turn it into sesquioxide, which is then used as iron ore, but this is rarely done nowadays. The English name comes from the Greek word pyrros, meaning "red."
