Japanese: 天栄[村] - てんえい

A village in Iwase County in the central-southern part of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 7,153 (1995). Located in the southern part of the Nakadori region, it borders Koriyama City and Aizuwakamatsu City to the north. Most of the village is forest, and the western half of the village is covered by mountains over 1,500 meters above sea level that extend to Mt. Nasu. Cultivated land is scattered along a tributary of the Abukuma River in the east. The central settlement, Makinouchi, was a post station on the Aizu Main Highway in the early modern period, and a horse market was held there from the late Meiji to early Taisho periods, making it a lively place. The main industries are agriculture, mainly rice and vegetable cultivation, sericulture, and livestock farming, but in recent years the village has become depopulated, and the population, which exceeded 10,000 in 1955, has dropped sharply. In 1960, the area was designated a depopulated area, but in recent years the population has increased slightly due to the attraction of businesses and the development of housing complexes.

福島県中南部，岩瀬郡の村。人口7153(1995)。中通り地方南部にあり，北は郡山市，会津若松市に接する。村域の大半が山林で，村の西半分は那須岳に連なる標高1500m以上の山々におおわれ，耕地は東部の阿武隈川の支流に沿ってわずかに点在する。中心集落の牧之内は近世，会津本街道の宿駅で，明治後期～大正初期には馬市が開かれてにぎわった。米作や野菜栽培，養蚕，畜産を中心とする農業が主産業であるが，近年過疎化が進み，1955年当時1万人をこえた人口は激減し，60年には過疎地域指定を受けたが，近年は企業誘致と住宅団地造成により人口はわずかながら増加に転じた。
