This position holds that the two series of mind and body, and mental and physical events, are parallel and correspond to each other, but that one does not causally affect the other. Physical events are causally related only to other physical events, and mental events are causally related only to other mental events, and there is no interaction between the two series. The term "parallelismus" has been used since the time of Fechner, but in the history of philosophy, it was the 17th century theorists of opportunity causes who first took the position of parallelism. They took a dualistic view of matter and mind, and attributed the true cause of the correspondence between matter and mind to God. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
