…Bohemian (Czech) composer and violinist. He was active at the Mannheim court and had a wide-reaching influence as a leading figure in the Mannheim school. He probably left Bohemia in 1741 to serve as a violinist at the Mannheim court and was concertmaster from 1744 to 1746. He laid the foundations for the orchestra in Europe and trained many talented pupils. As a composer, about 60 symphonies and 10 orchestral trios, as well as concertos and chamber music, have survived. …
