...The name derives from the term macchia (color spots), which refers to the rough touches of paint they used. The group was founded when Serafino de Tivoli (1826-92), who had visited the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855, returned to Florence and reported the results of his trip to his companions who had been gathering at the Café Michelangelo, who had long been anti-academic. He saw the Barbizon School's paintings at the Paris Universal Exhibition and saw in their powerful naturalism the path they should follow in the future. ...
