Gouache (English spelling)

Japanese: グアッシュ（英語表記）gouache

A term used in painting. Water-soluble, opaque paints that use gum arabic as a solvent. Or a painting made with these paints. The colors are vivid, and when applied over a number of layers, a durable texture is obtained. They were used in ancient Persia and Egypt, and in medieval European miniatures, but became popular in the 18th century and were used by Picasso, Matisse, Rouault, Chagall, and others. They can also be used in combination with other watercolors.

絵画用語。アラビアゴムを溶剤とする水溶性不透明絵具。あるいはその絵具で描いた絵。色彩は鮮明で，塗重ねると堅牢なマチエールが得られる。古くは古代ペルシア，エジプトで用いられ，ヨーロッパ中世のミニアチュールにも使用されたが，18世紀に流行し，その後もピカソ，マチス，ルオー，シャガールらが使用した。ほかの水彩絵具との併用も可能。
