A term used in painting. Water-soluble, opaque paints that use gum arabic as a solvent. Or a painting made with these paints. The colors are vivid, and when applied over a number of layers, a durable texture is obtained. They were used in ancient Persia and Egypt, and in medieval European miniatures, but became popular in the 18th century and were used by Picasso, Matisse, Rouault, Chagall, and others. They can also be used in combination with other watercolors. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
