August Thienemann

Japanese: ティーネマン - てぃーねまん(英語表記)August Thienemann
August Thienemann

German limnologist and freshwater biologist. In the 1910s, through research on small crater lakes in the middle Rhine region, he discovered the relationship between lake depth, dissolved oxygen, and the species of benthic chironomids. This became the basis for subsequent lake typology. He became director of the Prion Limnological Institute and also served as a professor at Kiel University. He was one of the founders of the International Society for Theoretical and Applied Limnology, which was established in 1922, and later served as its president. In addition to researching lakes in central Europe, he conducted limnological surveys in the Sunda Islands (1928-1929), laying the foundations for research into tropical lakes. He published approximately 460 papers and books, occupying an important position in modern limnology.
