A function y of x determined by is called an algebraic function of x . In the above equation, for one value of x , generally n values of y are determined, so y is an n- valued function. Polynomials, rational functions, and irrational functions are all algebraic functions. However, algebraic equations of degree 5 or higher cannot always be solved algebraically, so algebraic functions include functions that are different from polynomials, rational functions, and irrational functions. In addition, the inverse function of an algebraic function, or an algebraic function of an algebraic function, is also an algebraic function.

によって定まる x の関数 y を，x の代数関数という。上の方程式においては，x の1つの値に対して，一般に y の値は n 個定まるから，y は n 価関数である。整関数，有理関数，無理関数はいずれも代数関数である。しかし，5次以上の代数方程式は必ずしも代数的に解けるとはかぎらないから，代数関数のなかには，整関数，有理関数，無理関数とは異なるものが含まれる。また代数関数の逆関数，あるいは代数関数の代数関数も代数関数である。
