Outline Font

Also known as vector fonts or scalable fonts. A font that stores character shape information as vector data with outline direction and length, and converts it into dot data by calculation according to size when displayed or printed. Although it takes time to process, no jagged edges (jaggies) appear when characters are enlarged or transformed. This means that only one size is needed per font, which saves on storage devices. However, it has the disadvantage that characters become squashed when reduced in size, making them harder to read than bitmap fonts. A typical software for this is PostScript, developed by Adobe Systems, and is currently commonly used as DTP output data.

ベクトルフォント，スケーラブルフォントとも。字形情報を輪郭（アウトライン）の方向と長さを持つベクトルデータで持ち，表示・印刷時に大きさにあわせて計算でドット（点）データに変換するフォント。処理に時間はかかるが，文字を拡大，変形してもギザギザ（ジャギーjaggies）が生じない。このため，一つのフォントあたり１種類の大きささえ用意しておけばよく，記憶装置の節約になる。しかし文字を縮小すると文字が潰れてビットマップフォントより見づらくなる欠点もある。代表的なソフトウェアはアドビシステムズAdobe Systemsが開発したポストスクリプト（postscript）で，現在DTP出力データとして一般的。
