A seabird that lives offshore except during breeding season. It was thought that the closest relative was the Pterodroma genus, but genetic studies revealed that it is the Procellaria genus. Total length 25-29cm. Its whole body is black-brown, with the tips of its coverts being slightly lighter in color. Its tail is wedge-shaped with a pointed tip. It breeds on islands in the Pacific Ocean from southeastern China to the Hawaiian Islands, and on islands in the northwestern waters of North Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. After breeding, it disperses to tropical waters around the world. It mainly catches small fish, squid, and plankton near the surface at night while flying. In Japan, it breeds on the Ogasawara Islands and the Iwo Islands. It nests in rock crevices, hollows, and shelves inside holes.

ミズナギドリ目ミズナギドリ科。繁殖時以外は沖合いの海上で生活する海鳥。類縁の近いのはシロハラミズナギドリ属 Pterodroma とずっと考えられていたが，遺伝子を調べてクロミズナギドリ属 Procellaria だとわかった。全長 25～29cm。全身黒褐色で，雨覆羽の先端部はやや明色。尾の形は先のとがった楔形である。繁殖地は太平洋では中国東南部からハワイ諸島にかけての島嶼と，大西洋では北アフリカ北西海域の島嶼で，繁殖後はおもに世界中の熱帯海域に分散する。おもに夜間に水面近くにいる小魚やイカ，プランクトンを飛びながらとる。日本では小笠原諸島や硫黄列島などで繁殖している。岩の割れ目やくぼみ，穴の内の棚部などに営巣する。
