A poet and philanthropist from the end of the Edo period. His childhood name was Yoshibei, and after he became a monk he was known as Yoshiya. After he returned to secular life he was commonly known as Tsuyoshifu, and later Shizuma. He was called Ginger Garden. His poetic name was Azumao. He was born in Urasu Village, Shinji County, Hitachi Province (Yasugou Village, Ibaraki Prefecture) as the eldest son of Iijima Heizo. He became a monk at the age of 15, and in 1835 (Tenpo 6) he became the head priest of Zennoji Temple in Manabe Village (Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture). In December 1818 he became a disciple of Hirata Atsutane. In June of the following year (1819) he purified himself in front of Kashima Shrine and returned to secular life, at which point he changed his name to Sakura (Sakura) Azumao. He was close to the Tsuchiura scholar of Japanese classics, Irokawa Sanchu, and received financial support from him. He went to Kyoto in 1845 (Koka 2), and from around the beginning of the Kaei era he served as a priest at Zama Shrine in Osaka, while also publishing books on Japanese classics (Zama edition). In 1854, he became the head priest of the Myoho-in Imperial Family. In 1860, he hid Takahashi Taichiro in Osaka during the Sakuradamon Incident, but was captured and sent to Edo, where he died of starvation in Tenmacho Prison. <Works> "Sakura Touyu Poetry Collection" <References> Shigeru Mochizuki "Sakura Touyu"

幕末の歌人,志士。幼名吉兵衛,出家し良哉,還俗し通称靭負,のち静馬。薑園と号す。東雄は歌号。常陸国新治郡浦須村(茨城県八郷村)で飯島平蔵の長男に生まれる。15歳で出家し,天保6(1835)年真鍋村(茨城県土浦市)善応寺住職となる。13年12月平田篤胤に入門。翌14年6月鹿島神宮神前で潔斎し還俗,このとき佐久良(桜)東雄と改名。土浦の国学者色川三中と親しく,経済的支援を受けた。弘化2(1845)年上洛,嘉永初年ごろより大坂坐摩神社神官を務め,一方国学書の出版を行う(坐摩版)。安政1(1854)年妙法院宮家家司となる。万延1(1860)年桜田門外の変に際し大坂で高橋多一郎をかくまい捕らえられ,江戸に送られ伝馬町獄中にて絶食し死亡。<著作>『佐久良東雄歌集』<参考文献>望月茂『佐久良東雄』
