Geographer. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the Department of Geology at Tokyo Imperial University, where he majored in geography and geomorphology. He succeeded Yamazaki Naomasa as professor of geography at the Faculty of Science at the University of Tokyo, where he nurtured talented individuals. With his keen observational skills and comprehensive insight, he pioneered research into Japan's topography and landscapes. He published papers on mountains, glaciers, volcanoes, and fault landforms, and was also deeply interested in cultural geography, biogeography, and nature conservation. He served as president of the Association of Japanese Geographers, and was an honorary member of both the Association and the Japanese Alpine Club. He wrote many books, including Geomorphology (1925) and Japanese Topography (1929), which were pioneering works in Japanese geomorphology, two volumes of New Geomorphology (1933-1934), and a substantial study, Fault Topography (1942). He also wrote many essays and reviews, including Cultural Geography (1941), Lectures on Landscape Geography (1937), and Landscape Theory (1955). He also wrote Mountains (1942), Coast Geography (1948), as well as excellent essays such as Japanese Landscape (1958), Late Autumn Record (1940), and Yellow Leaves Collection (1958).
