…He was also one of the founders of the Royal Statistical Society. In opposition to the so-called "monetaryism" represented by Ricardo, who considered fluctuations in the money supply to be the root cause of price increases and economic depression, he, along with John Fullarton (1780-1849) and others, advocated the theory of "bankerism," which held that the expansion and contraction of economic activity resulted in fluctuations in the money supply (monetaryism, bankerism). His main works were "The History of Prices and the State of Circulation, 1793-1837" (co-authored, 1838-57) and "An Investigation into the Principles of Currency" (1844). …
