Aomori Hiba, or "beautiful forest," refers to the lush Japanese cypress that grows in the territory of the former Hirosaki Domain, which occupies the western half of Aomori Prefecture. It is also called Mutsu Hiba or Aomori Hiba. It is known as one of the "Three Most Beautiful Forests of Japan," along with the cedar forests of Akita and the cypress forests of Kiso (Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture). It is a general term for the natural forests of Japanese cypress (more precisely, Hinoki Asunaro) that grow densely in the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas at the northernmost tip of Honshu, and the coniferous forests that are dominated by Japanese cypress thanks to the conservation and afforestation policies of the Tsugaru Domain. Japanese cypress is also widely distributed in the territory of the former Morioka Domain in the eastern half of the prefecture, but most of the Japanese cypress forests in the prefecture are national forests.
