Ogiwara Well Spring - Ogiwara Well Spring

Haiku poet. Born on June 16, 1884 in Shiba Shinmeicho, Tokyo (present-day Hamamatsucho, Minato Ward). His real name was Toukichi. He began composing haiku in middle school, and entered the former First Higher School in 1901 (Meiji 34). He was involved with Tsunoda Chikurei's Shusei-kai and Okano Chiju's Hanmen-ha, and later joined Masaoka Shiki's Nihon-ha and founded the First Higher School haiku club. In 1905 he entered the Department of Linguistics at Tokyo Imperial University, and joined Kawahigashi Hekigoto's new trend haiku movement, changing his pen name from Aiou to Seisen-sui. In 1908 he graduated from the University of Tokyo. He founded the magazine "Soun" with Hekigoto in April 1918, but Hekigoto left the magazine in the early Taisho period due to differences in opinion regarding seasonal themes, and Seisensu advocated free-style haiku that rejected seasonal themes and fixed forms, and produced such poets as Nomura Shurindo, Serita Housya, Ozaki Hosai, and Taneda Santoka as his disciples. His haiku collections include "Gensen" (1960), "Choryu" (1964), and "Oe" (1971), and his major works include "Haiku Advocacy" (1917), "Shin Haiku Kenkyu" (1926), "Tabibito Basho" Seishu (1923-1925), and "Oku no Hosomichi Hyoron" (1928). He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1965 (Showa 40). He passed away on May 20, 1976.
