In China, the section of official histories that contains geographical descriptions. Of the 24 official histories, 16 contain volumes 1 to 7 of the Geography Journal: Book of Han, Book of Later Han, Book of Jin, Book of Song, Book of Southern Qi, Book of Northern Wei, Book of Sui, Book of New Tang, Book of Old Tang, New History of the Five Dynasties, Old History of the Five Dynasties, History of Song, History of Liao, History of Jin, History of Yuan, History of Ming. Although these are called differently, such as Gazetteer of the County and State (Book of Later Han), Gazetteer of the Prefectures (Book of Song and Book of Southern Qi), and Topographical Gazetteer (Book of Northern Wei), they are essentially the same. As the administrative organization of the Western Han Empire was improved, it became customary to record geographical facts about the entire country, centering on the county and prefecture system, as part of the Journal of the Official Histories.
