In the 20th century, the university was in the midst of the language conflicts in Belgium, as it mainly used French despite being located in a Flemish (Dutch) region. After an increase in lectures in Dutch and the division into French and Dutch departments, the university split into two in 1968, with the French department moving to the newly built Louvain-la-Neuve (Ottignies), about 30 km southwest of the city. At the same time, the university administration was secularized and democratized.
