Complete Guide to Thread Bamboo

A document on Japanese music. It is a compilation of three books, originally independent: "Oonusa" (a collection of shamisen scores), "Ikanobori" (a collection of hitoyogiri shakuhachi scores), and "Chin no Nakadachi" (a collection of lyrics for koto kumiuta). As this book contains descriptions of the three instruments, it is thought to be a copy of the earlier book "Shichikushoshinshu" (1664). The first editions of all three books were published during the Jokyo era (1684-88), but there are many unknowns about when they were collected together as "Shichiku Daizen." The version that is widely circulated today is the one published in 1699 (Genroku 12) by Nagata Chobei of Kyoto, but many copies of the three books are missing "Chin no Nakadachi." The authors of "Oonusa" and "Kamitobi" are unknown. "Chion no dai" is thought to have been compiled by Shofuken. "Oonusa" (4 volumes in total) and "Kamitobi" (3 volumes in total) contain explanations of the history and playing techniques of each instrument, as well as musical scores, and can be considered similar to "Itotake Shoshinshu." However, "Chion no dai" is a collection of lyrics and commentaries for koto group songs, but does not contain musical scores, and is different in nature from the other two books.
