Savona (English spelling)

Japanese: サボナ(英語表記)Savona
Savona (English spelling)
A port city in northwest Italy facing the Gulf of Genoa on the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital of the province of Savona in Liguria. It is located about 37 km southwest of Genoa. In 205 BC, it fought against Rome in alliance with Carthage, and was destroyed by the Lombards in 639. In the Middle Ages, it was the site of Savona pottery, and became an autonomous city, competing with Genoa for supremacy but losing (1528). Napoleon occupied the city in 1805, and imprisoned Pope Pius VII from 1809 to 1812. It is now one of Italy's major ports, with the northern industrial region as its hinterland. It imports coal, oil, and other products, and exports automobiles and other products. Coal is transported inland by aerial cable, and oil by pipeline. It is also a center of steel production, and other industries include shipbuilding, machinery, and electrical equipment. The old town is typical of a medieval city, with Renaissance and Baroque cathedrals (16th century) and the fortress (16th century) where G. Mazzini was imprisoned in 1830. Population: 67,137 (1991 estimate).
