Ise Heishi

The main branch of the Kanmu Heishi clan, named after the fact that they were based in Ise. Descendants of Emperor Kanmu, they were based in the eastern provinces until the time of Taira Kunikane and Taira Sadamori, but lost their base during the Taira Masakado Rebellion (→ Jōhei-Tengyō Rebellion) and Taira Tadatsune Rebellion, and from the time of Sadamori's son Korehira, they were called the Ise Heishi clan, with Ise as their base. During the late Heian period, under Taira Masamori, they donated their Iga estate, Tomoda Manor, to Rokujō-in, gaining the trust of Emperor Shirakawa, and his son Tadamori also became associated with the cloistered government and was allowed to advance and enter the palace. His son Kiyomori wiped out opposing forces such as the Minamoto clan in the Hōgen and Heiji Rebellions, establishing the Heike government. The clan enjoyed its heyday with 16 nobles and over 30 courtiers from the clan, but anti-Heike forces led by the Minamoto clan rose up in rebellion and the clan was destroyed at Dannoura in Nagato in 1185, shortly after Kiyomori's death.

桓武平氏の主流で，伊勢を本拠としたところからその名がある。桓武天皇の子孫で，平国香および平貞盛のときまでは東国を基盤としていたが，平将門の乱（→承平・天慶の乱），平忠常の乱で地盤を失い，貞盛の子維衡のときから伊勢を本拠地として伊勢平氏と呼ばれた。平安時代末期平正盛のとき，伊賀の所領鞆田荘を六条院に寄進して白河法皇の信任を得，その子忠盛も院政政権と結びついて累進，昇殿を許された。その子清盛は保元・平治の乱によって源氏などの対立勢力を一掃し平氏政権を樹立した。一門の公卿 16人，殿上人 30人余を数える全盛時代を現出したが，源氏以下の反平氏勢力が蜂起し，清盛の死後まもない元暦2（1185）年長門壇ノ浦に滅亡。
