It is also called the Treaty of Lhasa or the British-Turkish Treaty. The Treaty of Sikkim (1890) gave Britain a foothold in Tibet, but the Tibetan side's hardline stance prevented the treaty from being implemented smoothly, while Russia was also actively trying to approach Tibet. Britain (especially the Indian government) felt increasingly alarmed by this situation and sent Younghusband to march to Lhasa. As a result, the Tibet-India Treaty was signed with the Tibetan side in 1904, incorporating Tibet into its sphere of influence. Although Britain's position in Tibet was somewhat weakened by the establishment of the Anglo-Russian Entente in 1907, after the signing of this treaty Britain had a strong influence on the Tibetan issue.
