...There have been attempts since ancient times to organize all odors by establishing a number of basic odors, such as the four basic taste sensations (taste qualities) of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. H. Zwaardemarker considered nine basic odors (1895), and H. Henning assumed six basic odors, placing each odor at each vertex of a triangular prism (an odor prism), and thinking that all odors could be represented by points on the surface of this triangular prism (1916). In recent years, J. A. Moore considered seven basic odors and linked them to the molecular structure of substances (1962). ...
