…Flemish landscape painter. Also spelled Brill. Born in Antwerp, he went to Rome around 1575 and continued to work there. After the death of his older brother Matthijs B. (1550-83), a painter who worked for the Papal Court, he was commissioned by Pope Sixtus V and Pope Clement VIII to decorate the Vatican, as well as landscapes (frescoes) for the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and Casino Rospigliosi.
