A representative Vietnamese zither-like instrument. It is written as 'danso' (flash zither). It is a 16-stringed koto. It began to be used in Vietnam in the 13th and 14th centuries, and some records say it had 15 strings at the time. Modern kotos are smaller than Japanese kotos, and have movable strings and pegs. Until the 17th century, the strings were made of silk, but since then they have been made of metal. It is played by wearing a metal giko on the thumb and index finger of the right hand (and in the north, the middle finger), and the left hand changes the tension of the strings to create subtle nuances such as pushing. In addition to playing solo, it is used in ensembles with the yueqin Đàn Nguyet (flash moon) or with the two-stringed kokyū Đàn Nhi, or in improved opera (Hat Khai Luong).
