Cultivating only one type of crop in a field. In contrast, cultivating several crops together is called mixed cropping, and planting one type of crop between the ridges of another crop is called intercropping. Monocropping requires simple cultivation work, can be done by machine, and has high yields and high productivity. However, it has drawbacks such as the difficulty in dispersing the risks of pests, disease, and wind and flood damage, and the temporary need for a lot of labor when the harvest of the previous crop is followed by the planting of the next crop. Note that after cultivating rice in paddy fields in the summer, no winter crop is grown due to snowfall or cold weather, i.e., monocropping of rice, is commonly referred to as monocropping of rice or monocropping of paddy fields.

圃場(ほじょう)に1種類の作物だけ栽培すること。これに対して、いくつかの作物をいっしょに栽培することを混作、ある作物の畝(うね)間に別種の作物を植えることを間作という。単作は栽培作業が単純で機械作業ができ、収量も高く、生産能率も高い。しかし病虫害や風水害などに対する危険を分散しにくいことや、前作の収穫と後作の作付けの連続する場合には一時的に多くの労力を要するなどの難点もある。なお、水田に夏季に水稲を栽培したあと、積雪や寒冷のために冬作をしない、すなわち、水稲一毛作のことを俗にイネ単作、水田単作などということがある。
