The Dian Cemetery was built on the eastern slope of Shizhai Mountain, facing the eastern bank of the Dian Lake, about 5 km west of Jinning County, Yunnan Province, China. The tombs were not enclosed, but were dug into rocky mountains as pits, but some have lacquered coffins. They are divided into four types based on the contents of the grave goods. Type I tombs contain bronze drums, shell containers, and hulusheng (a type of horned instrument) with unique indigenous styles and designs, as well as many bronze artifacts such as halberds, spears, swords, and axes, but contain no iron tools or Han-style artifacts, and are dated to the early Western Han period. Type II tombs contain more production tools such as bronze hoes and plows, and iron products such as iron axes and iron swords with gold sheaths.
