Nusubitohagi - thief and hagi

A perennial plant of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The stem is 0.3-1.2 meters tall, with sparse leaves and a slightly woody base. The leaves are trilobular, with the terminal leaflet being diamond-shaped, 5-8 cm long, and bluntly pointed. From July to September, racemes appear at the stem apex and upper leaf axils, and produce many small, pale purple, butterfly-shaped flowers. The legume usually consists of two nodule, with a deeply constricted node. The nodule is crescent-shaped, 5-7 mm long and wide, and has hooks on the surface that attach to clothing. It grows in the mountains and fields of Japan, and is distributed in the Korean Peninsula, China, Myanmar (Burma), and the Himalayas. The name means "thief's foot bush clover" as the shape of its small fruits resembles the footprints of a thief walking with his feet standing upright.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の多年草。茎は高さ0.3～1.2メートルで、まばらに葉をつけ、基部はやや木質となる。葉は三小葉からなり、頂小葉は菱(ひし)状卵形で長さ5～8センチメートル、先は鈍くとがる。7～9月、茎頂と上部の葉腋(ようえき)に総状花序を出し、淡紅紫色の小さな蝶形(ちょうけい)花を多数つける。豆果は普通は2個の小節果よりなり、節は深くくびれる。小節果は半月形で、長さ、幅とも5～7ミリメートル、表面にある鉤(かぎ)毛で衣服などに付着する。日本各地の山野に生え、朝鮮半島、中国、ミャンマー（ビルマ）、ヒマラヤに分布する。名は「盗人の足萩(はぎ)」の意味で、その小節果の形を、足をそばだてて歩く泥棒の足跡に見立てたものである。
