Dar al-Islām (English spelling)

Japanese: ダール･アルイスラーム（英語表記）dār al‐Islām

It is an Arabic word meaning "House of Islam," but it corresponds to what we call the "Islamic world." Dar can mean the world because, unlike bayt (house), it originally meant a space surrounded by a wall, fence, tent, or rampart. According to Islamic law, the world is divided into Dar al-Islam, which is governed by Islamic law, and dār al-ḥarb (House of War), which is governed by the law of pagans, and the purpose of jihad is to conquer the latter and turn it into the former.

〈イスラムの家〉を意味するアラビア語であるが，われわれが呼ぶ〈イスラム世界〉に相当する。ダールが世界を意味しうるのは，それがバイトbayt(家)と違って，本来，壁，塀，天幕，城壁などで囲まれた空間を意味するからである。イスラム法によれば，世界はイスラム法の支配するダール･アルイスラームと，異教徒の法の支配するダール･アルハルブdār al‐ḥarb(戦いの家)とに二分され，後者を征服によって前者にすることがジハードの目的である。
