A city located in the southeast of Queensland, Australia, 387 km (by road) north-northwest of Brisbane. Population 43,549 (2001). It is located on the right bank of the Burnett River, near the mouth of the river. It is a regional central city with a port, with the surrounding sugar cane-growing areas (settlement in 1875) as its hinterland. The port is a raw sugar export port (approximately 600,000 tons per year) with dedicated loading facilities. There is a sugar refining factory (established in 1882) and an agricultural machinery factory for sugar cane. Municipal organization was established in 1913.
