This is a hook that allows you to freely adjust the height of a pot or pan relative to the fire in the hearth. The most primitive form was a fork-shaped piece of wood called a matsukagi that was hung from a ridgepole and was used until recently in huts built for dézukuri (a traditional hut built for a hut), but the height could not be adjusted. This was later improved to a hook made of a thick board with sawtooth-like grooves, which allowed the height to be raised or lowered as much as the number of grooves allowed. This type of wooden hook is called a gandakagi, and can be seen in many places in the Tohoku region, where the Ainu people also used it.
