A town in Oshima District, northeast of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Population 5,889 (1995). Facing the East China Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the southeast, it borders Naze City to the west and Kasari Town to the east, via the Akaogi Isthmus. The Nagagumo Mountains and Jugo Mountains stretch from northeast to southwest, and the area is mostly made up of steep mountainous terrain, with settlements scattered along the coast and in river basins. Oshima Tsumugi silk production is the town's main industry, and many people are employed in the silk industry, but in recent years the number of people working in the construction industry has also increased. Forestry is centered on the production of wood chips and the umbellifera plant, which is used as a dye for Oshima Tsumugi silk, and agriculture is thriving, with sugar cane as the main crop, as well as bananas, vegetables, and livestock farming. 鹿児島県奄美大島北東部にある大島郡の町。人口5889(1995)。北は東シナ海,南東は太平洋に面し,西は名瀬市,東は赤尾木地峡で笠利町に隣接する。北東から南西に長雲(ながぐも)山脈や十五山系が連なり,急峻な山地が大部分を占め,海岸部や河川流域に集落が散在する。大島紬の生産が基幹産業で,紬関連就業者が多いが,近年は建設業従事者も増えている。林業はチップ材,大島紬の染料となるシャリンバイの生産を主とし,農業はサトウキビを中心にバナナ,野菜の栽培,畜産が盛んである。
