During the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), the Swedish army of Gustav II set an example for all warring nations with its triple-arms tactics, and the Red, Blue, and Yellow regiments, so named for their colors, were the first step toward uniformed battle dress. Around the same time, Louis XIV's Royal Guard was given a uniform, and in 1644, Cromwell of England adopted shrimp-shell helmets and scarlet uniforms for his parliamentary army, earning the soldiers the nickname "shrimp soldiers."
