Tartan (English spelling)

Tartan (English spelling)
A plain or twill weave fabric with a large checkered pattern in various colors. Tartan is a term unique to Japan. In the Scottish Highlands, checkered woolen fabrics were called tartans from the late 15th century. Each large clan had its own tartan, called clan tartan or district tartan, which was used for their clothing, such as kilts, plaids, bonnets, socks, and ribbons. When a large clan branched off, they added one or two stripes to create a new tartan, which was called a family tartan. The basic colors were green, red, dark blue, yellow, white, and black, all of which had a unique deep color scheme made with vegetable dyes. This continued until the British Parliament issued a ban on ethnic clothing in 1746, and after the ban was lifted in 1782, the pattern became popular not only in Scotland but around the world.
