The relay system of the Roman Empire. During the Republic, magistrates and private citizens had to send their own servants to communicate. Augustus replaced the relay system of messengers in Italy and the West with a system of stations with horses and carts at regular intervals, as was practiced in the East, especially in Egypt. This allowed a single messenger to cover the entire route by changing horses at each station, and to give oral reports if necessary. This system was limited to official communication; private use required the emperor's permission, which was rarely given. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
