[Origin] " Old Testament - The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil that was in the Garden of Eden, as described in Genesis 3. God, who created this world, also created a man and a woman, Adam and Eve, and had them live in the Garden of Eden. They were free to eat any fruit that grew in the Garden, except for the fruit in the middle, which was forbidden because "if you eat of it, you will die." However, Eve was tempted by the serpent and ate the fruit, and then made Adam eat it as well. As a result, humans gained wisdom, but in return they were banished from the Garden of Eden.

[Explanation] ❶ Even God is quite wicked, planting it in a conspicuous place and then forbidding people from eating its fruit. This story well illustrates the relationship between "forbidden" and "attractiveness." ❷ In many cases, it is used to refer to something that is forbidden and therefore seems all the more attractive, or something that is forbidden but so attractive that you can't help but break the prohibition. It can also be used to refer to something that is not forbidden, but is difficult to obtain.

[由来] 「旧約聖書―創世記・三」に書かれている、エデンの園にあった、善悪を知る木の実のこと。この世界を創造した神は、アダムとイブという人間の男女をも創り出し、エデンの園に住まわせました。二人は、エデンの園に生えている木の実を自由に食べていいのですが、真ん中にある木の実だけは、「食べると死ぬから食べてはいけない」と禁じられていました。しかし、イブは蛇にそそのかされてその実を食べ、アダムにもそれを食べさせてしまいます。その結果、人間は知恵を得ましたが、代わりに、エデンの園から追放されたのでした。

[解説] ❶目立つところに植えておいて、その実を食べてはいけないと禁じるとは、神様もなかなか人が悪いですね。「禁じる」ということと「魅力」の関係を、よく表している話です。❷多くの場合、禁じられているからこそよけいに魅力的に見えるものや、禁じられてはいるけれど、ついついその禁を破ってしまうほど魅力的なものに対して使われます。また、禁じられているのではなく、簡単には手に入れられないものに対して、用いられることもあります。
