A marine fish of the family Takambidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is found south of central Honshu, but is caught in large quantities in the Izu Seven Islands and elsewhere, making it an important fishery species. It is called Shaka on the Izu Peninsula, Bent on Kashiwajima in Kochi Prefecture, and Hota in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a beautiful fish with a vibrant blue-green body and a vibrant yellow vertical stripe that runs from behind the eye to the tail fin. It reaches a total length of 25 cm. It lives in large schools in the mid-depth of slightly deep rocky reefs with good tidal flow. It mainly feeds on zooplankton such as planktonic crustaceans. スズキ目タカベ科の海産魚(イラスト)。本州中部以南に分布しているが,伊豆七島などでは漁獲量も多く,水産上重要な種の一つ。伊豆半島でシャカ,高知県柏島でベント,鹿児島県でホタと呼ぶ。鮮やかな青緑色の体に,眼の後方から尾びれに走る鮮やかな黄色縦帯のある美しい魚である。全長25cmに達する。潮通しのよい,やや深い岩礁域の中層に大群をなして群れている。おもに浮遊性の甲殻類などの動物プランクトンを食べている。
