This Shingon sect temple is located in Takahata, Hino City, Tokyo. Its correct name is Takahata-san Kongo-ji Temple and Takahata-san Myo-o-in Temple. The principal image is Acala. The date of its founding is unknown, but it is said to have been before the Taiho era (701-704), when Gyoki enshrined the Vairocana Buddha and Kukai enshrined the Acala. It is also said that Jikaku Daishi Ennin built the Acala Hall on the top of Takahata-yama by imperial order of Emperor Seiwa during the Jogan era (859-877). It fell into ruin for a time, but was rebuilt by Heien during the Gangyo era (877-885) and became a place of imperial prayer for Emperor Yozei. It was destroyed by a storm in 1335 (Kenmu 2). Around 1342 (Kokoku 3, Koei 1), during the reign of Gikai, it was rebuilt on the same site. In 1415 (Oei 22), Jokai repaired the temple. It was worshipped by Ashikaga Takauji, Ujimitsu, and Mitsukane, and Mitsukane in particular donated 300 cho of land. It is famous as one of the three great Fudo temples in the Kanto region, along with Naritasan in Chiba and Oyama in Kanagawa. The Fudo hall was built in 1342, and the Niomon gate in the late Muromachi period, and both are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Within the temple grounds are monuments to Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, as well as a stone monument bearing a haiku by Basho. Many people visit the first Fudo festival on January 28th.
