A Shinpa actor from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Tokyo. He entered the theater world in 1892 (Meiji 25) after working for a railroad company. His breakthrough role was playing Li Hongzhang in Kawakami Otojiro's troupe's "Sino-Japanese War" (1894). In 1896 he formed the Seibi-dan troupe in Osaka, and made an effort to pioneer realism. In 1891 he published the critique "Advocating New Naturalist Drama," and played an active role as a central actor in the Kansai Shinpa school. He later returned to Tokyo and became the head actor of the Hongo-za theater, ushering in the heyday of Shinpa drama. His hit roles included Arao Josuke in "Konjiki Yasha," Sakubei in "Okina no Tsumi," and Sanzo in "Biwa Uta." 明治大正期の新派俳優。東京生まれ。鉄道会社員から明治25(1892)年劇界に入った。川上音二郎一座の「日清戦争」(1894)で李鴻章に扮したのが出世役となる。29年大阪で成美団を結成,写実芸の開拓に尽力し,34年には評論「自然主義新演劇を唱ふ」を発表,関西新派の中心俳優として活躍した。のち帰京して本郷座の座頭俳優となり,新派劇全盛時代を招来した。当たり役に「金色夜叉」の荒尾譲介,「己が罪」の作兵衛,「琵琶歌」の三蔵など。内面的な演技表現が巧みで「新演劇の団十郎」と呼ばれた。<参考文献>柳永二郎「高田実研究」(『新派の六十年』)
