A butterfly of the Nymphalidae family of the Lepidoptera order. Forewing length is about 36mm. The upper part of the wings is dark brown with orange markings, but the female's base color is pale yellowish brown. The upper part of the male's wings, except for the outer edge, shines a beautiful purple color depending on the angle from which it is viewed, but the female lacks this purple luster. Also, a type that is entirely black with a white orange band in the center of the wing, which at first glance appears to be a different species, is found only in central Honshu and central and southern Kyushu, and is specifically called the black purple butterfly. Adults appear two to three times a year. They overwinter as larvae. The larvae feed on willow leaves. They are distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, northern China, Siberia, and Europe. The original subspecies is from Europe, and the one found in Japan is called the subspecies A. i. substituta .
