...The oldest known daffodils are Narcissus tazetta, a wreath found in Egypt that was probably created by Greek inhabitants about 2000 years ago, and Narcissus poeticus L. (illustration), which has a red or red-leaved corona that appears in ancient Greek poetry. In addition to these two species, other major wild species include Narcissus pseudo - narcissus L. (illustration), which has a long corona, Narcissus cyclamineus DC ., which has a 180° curled-back perianth, Narcissus triandrus L. , which has flowers that bloom downward and curled-back tepals, Narcissus jonquilla L., which has cylindrical leaves, and Narcissus bulbocodium L. , which has a funnel-shaped corona . Horticultural varieties have been actively improved since about 1850, and by 1954 there were over 11,000 varieties registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.
