Mahāsaṃghika (English spelling)

Japanese: 大衆部 - だいしゅぶ（英語表記）Mahāsaṃghika

Transliterated as Mahasanghiya-bu. One of the Buddhist sects. 100 years after Shakyamuni's death, the Great Heavenly Being appeared and proposed the Five Things, and monks who agreed with this split off from the traditional conservative monks to form this sect. The sect of conservative monks is called Theravada. It teaches that birth, death, and nirvana are ultimately provisional names, and that the minds of all living beings are originally pure, but are tainted by worldly desires, and the seeds of Mahayana Buddhism can be seen in it. It also teaches that there is no present reality, no past or future, and is opposed to the Sarvastāna school's idea that there is a true existence and a constant law body in the three periods of existence.

音写は摩訶僧祇部。部派仏教の一つ。釈尊が亡くなってから 100年たったとき，大天が出て，五事を提議したが，これに賛同した比丘たちが，従来の保守的な修行僧たちから分れて結成した部派のこと。保守的な修行僧たちの部派を上座部と呼ぶ。生死，涅槃は結局仮名で衆生の心性はもともと清浄であるが，煩悩にけがされているという説を説き，大乗仏教の萌芽をこのなかにみることができる。また現在実有過未無体を説き，有部の3世実有法体恒有に対立している。
