Dolerite - dolerite

Also called dolerite. A medium-grained igneous rock with a chemical composition similar to basalt, it often exhibits a texture in which elongated crystals of plagioclase are partially embedded in large crystals of augite (called ophitic texture). Its appearance is dense and dark gray-green. Most of the rocks are (1) tholeiitic and (2) alkaline rocks, while calc-alkaline rocks are rare. The minerals that make up (1) are plagioclase (bytonite-labradorite), clinopyroxene, olivine, titanomagnetite, ilmenite, alkali feldspar, and traces of autunite, and occasionally orthopyroxene. Clinopyroxene crystals may have an inner layer of augite and an outer layer of pigeonite (a monoclinic pyroxene with low calcium content). Orthopyroxene can be either crystallized directly from magma or transferred from pigeonite. Olivine crystals often have reaction rims of pigeonite or orthopyroxene. When it contains quartz, it is called quartz dolerite. (2) is called alkali olivine dolerite. The constituent minerals are plagioclase (albizite - andesine), olivine, titanium-rich augite, titanomagnetite, ilmenite, alkali feldspar, and small amounts of apatite. It may also contain biotite, amphibole (kaersutite), and zeolite (analcise). When it contains a large amount of analcime, it is called analcime dolerite or teschenite.

Dolerite usually forms small intrusive bodies (dykes and sills). A large tholeiitic dyke with a length of over 100 km (in the Karoo, South Africa) is known, as well as other well-known tholeiitic bodies in the Palisades, New Jersey, USA, Tasmania, Australia, and Antarctica. In these bodies, crystals settle inside the body between the time the magma intrudes and the time it solidifies, causing a significant change in mineral composition. For this reason, they are well-studied as suitable examples for studying the mechanism of crystallization differentiation of basaltic magma at shallow depths. In the USA, rocks called dolerite in Japan and the UK are often called diabase. Diabase was originally a name used in Germany for rocks formed before the Tertiary Period of the Cenozoic Era, and in the UK, diabase is used when dolerite is altered and pyroxene is replaced by amphibole. In Japan, the term is used in the same sense as in the UK.

ドレライトともいう。玄武岩と同じような化学組成をもつ中粒の火成岩で、普通輝石（オージャイト）の大きな結晶の中に斜長石の細長い結晶が一部分はめ込まれたように組み合わさった組織（オフィチック組織という）を示すことが多い。外観は緻密(ちみつ)で暗灰緑色である。(1)ソレアイト系列と(2)アルカリ岩系列のものが多く、カルク・アルカリ岩系列のものは少ない。(1)の構成鉱物は斜長石（亜灰長石（バイトゥナイト）―曹灰長石（ラブラドライト））と単斜輝石、橄欖(かんらん)石、チタン磁鉄鉱、チタン鉄鉱、アルカリ長石、微量の燐灰(りんかい)石で、まれに斜方輝石も含まれる。単斜輝石の結晶は内部が普通輝石で外側がピジョン輝石pigeonite（カルシウムに乏しい単斜晶系の輝石）になっていることがある。斜方輝石にはマグマから直接晶出したものと、ピジョン輝石から転移したものとがある。橄欖石の結晶の周囲にピジョン輝石か斜方輝石の反応縁ができていることが多い。石英を含むときは石英粗粒玄武岩という。(2)はアルカリ橄欖石粗粒玄武岩とよばれる。構成鉱物は斜長石（曹灰長石―中性長石（アンデシン））、橄欖石、チタンに富む普通輝石、チタン磁鉄鉱、チタン鉄鉱、アルカリ長石、少量の燐灰石である。黒雲母(くろうんも)、角閃(かくせん)石（ケルスート閃石）、沸石（方沸石）を含むことがある。方沸石を多く含む場合は方沸石粗粒玄武岩またはテッシェン岩tescheniteという。

　粗粒玄武岩は小規模な貫入岩体（岩脈やシル）をつくるのが普通である。ソレアイト系列のものには延長100キロメートル以上という大規模な岩脈（南アフリカのカルーにある）が知られており、ほかにもアメリカ、ニュー・ジャージー州のパリセーズ、オーストラリアのタスマニア、南極にあるものが有名である。これらの岩体では、マグマが貫入してから完全に固結するまでの間に岩体の内部で結晶の沈降がおこって鉱物組成の変化が顕著になっている。そのため地下浅所での玄武岩質マグマの結晶分化作用のメカニズムを研究するのに好適な例として詳しく研究されている。日本やイギリスで粗粒玄武岩といっている岩石をアメリカでは輝緑岩diabaseとよぶことが多い。輝緑岩とはもともとドイツで新生代第三紀以前にできた岩石に対して用いられた岩石名で、イギリスでは粗粒玄武岩が変質して輝石が角閃石に置換されている場合に輝緑岩という。日本でもイギリスと同じ意味で用いている。
