Trachyte

A volcanic rock belonging to the alkaline rock series, with less silica (silicon dioxide) and more alkali than rhyolite. Its chemical composition corresponds to that of syenite, a type of plutonic rock. It is characterized by a rough surface texture (a matrix of small, rectangular feldspar crystals arranged almost parallel to one another. When phenocrysts are present, the feldspar in the matrix wavy lines to avoid the phenocrysts). Some are rich in sodium alkali, while others are rich in both sodium and potassium. It usually contains about 10% _{Na 2} O + K ₂ O. The main mineral is alkali feldspar, with a small amount of colored minerals. In addition to alkali feldspar (sanidine, anorthoclase, orthoclase) as phenocrysts, it also contains plagioclase (oligoclase - albite), quartz, biotite, alkali amphibole, aegirine, olivine, and magnetite. The groundmass is composed of alkali feldspars (sanidine, anorthoclase, orthoclase) and plagioclase (oligoclase), and may contain small amounts of magnetite, ilmenite, and aegirine. Trachytes occur in association with lava and, rarely, as small intrusive bodies associated with alkali basalt. The rocks are light gray, greenish gray, or light pink in color.

流紋岩よりも無水ケイ酸（二酸化ケイ素）が少なく、アルカリが多い、アルカリ岩系列に属する火山岩。深成岩の一種である閃(せん)長岩に相当する化学組成をもつ。粗面組織（短冊形をした長石の小さい結晶がほぼ平行に配列した石基。斑晶(はんしょう)があると、石基の長石は斑晶をよけるようにうねって並ぶ）が特徴的である。アルカリのうちナトリウムだけが多いものと、ナトリウムとカリウムの両方が多いものとがある。Na₂O＋K₂Oとして約10％含むのが普通である。構成鉱物はアルカリ長石が主で、有色鉱物の量は少ない。斑晶としてアルカリ長石（サニディン、アノーソクレース、正長石）のほかに、斜長石（灰曹長石（オリゴクレース）―曹長石（アルバイト））、石英、黒雲母(くろうんも)、アルカリ角閃(かくせん)石、エジリン、橄欖(かんらん)石、磁鉄鉱を伴う。石基はアルカリ長石（サニディン、アノーソクレース、正長石）、斜長石（灰曹長石）からなり、少量の磁鉄鉱、チタン鉄鉱、エジリンを伴うことがある。粗面岩は溶岩、まれには小さな貫入岩体としてアルカリ玄武岩に伴って産する。表面がざらざらした感触をもつのでこの名がある。岩石は淡灰色、緑色を帯びた灰色、淡桃色などを呈する。
