Sufi (English spelling) Abū-al-Husain 'Abd al-Rahmān ibn 'Umar al-Rāzī al-Sūfī

One of the greatest Muslim astronomers. Born near Tehran. He was a friend and teacher of the Buyid ruler Abud al-Dawla (936-983). He made great contributions to the observation of the fixed stars, and his major work, Kitāb al-kawākib al-thābita al-musawwar , a catalog based on his own astronomical observations, is one of the most representative works of Islamic astronomy, containing many unique Arabian star names. This work was also introduced to Europe, and still influences the star names today.

イスラム教徒最大の天文学者の一人。テヘランの近くに生まれる。ブワイフ朝の支配者アブド・ウッ・ダウラAbud al-Dawla（936―983）の友人であり、教師であった。恒星の観測に業績を残し、自らの天文観測に基づいた目録『図解恒星書』Kitāb al-kawākib al-thābita al-musawwarは彼の主著で、アラビア独自の星名が多数収録されたイスラム天文学を代表する著作の一つである。この著はヨーロッパにも伝えられ、今日の星名にも影響を与えている。
