One of the greatest Muslim astronomers. Born near Tehran. He was a friend and teacher of the Buyid ruler Abud al-Dawla (936-983). He made great contributions to the observation of the fixed stars, and his major work, Kitāb al-kawākib al-thābita al-musawwar , a catalog based on his own astronomical observations, is one of the most representative works of Islamic astronomy, containing many unique Arabian star names. This work was also introduced to Europe, and still influences the star names today. [Hirata Hiroshi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
