Edo Komon - Edokomon

Japanese:
Edo Komon - Edokomon

The name Edo Komon was coined in 1952 (Showa 27) by the then Committee for the Protection of Cultural Properties (now the Agency for Cultural Affairs) when it recognized the technique of Komiya Kosuke (1882-1961), who lived in Tokyo, for dyeing Komon in one color, which was intricate and ancient, based on the tradition of Kamishimo Komon from the Edo period, and selected it as an "intangible cultural property for which support measures should be taken" to distinguish it from general Komon dyeing. Later, with the revision of the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties, Edo Komon was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of the nation in February 1955, and Komiya Kosuke was recognized as its holder, which led to the name Edo Komon becoming even more widely known. After Yasusuke's death, his son Yasutaka (1925-2017) and his son Yasumasa (1956- ) succeeded him and are recognized as holders of the Important Intangible Cultural Property Edo Komon.
