Spanish missionary. Franciscan priest. He played an active role as a central figure in Franciscan missionary activities in Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1603 (Keicho 8), first polishing his knowledge of the Japanese language in Kyoto, then evangelized in Kyoto, Bungo (Oita City), Osaka, and Edo, building churches, and opening a hospital for lepers in Asakusa, Edo. He gained the favor of Date Masamune and engaged in missionary activities in Edo, especially in the northern part of Honshu. In 1613, he was sentenced to death for the persecution of Christians in Edo by Tokugawa Hidetada, but was spared due to Masamune's plea. In the same year, he accompanied Hasekura Tsunenaga as part of Masamune's European mission, traveling via Mexico to Madrid and Rome. He was appointed bishop of eastern Japan by the Pope in Rome, but there were those who opposed him and he never took up the post. On his way back to Japan, he was detained by the Governor of Manila for four years, but in 1622 (Genwa 8), he set sail for Japan, where Christianity was banned, and infiltrated the Satsuma region, but was immediately arrested. Two years later, he was martyred by being burned at the stake near Omura.
