Also called "kajigami," this is the old name for kozo paper (also called "choshi"). The raw material for papermaking, Broussonetia papyrifera (also called "kaji" or "kaji") of the Mulberry family, is closely related to B. kazinoki (paper mulberry), but they are different species of plant, so a distinction is sometimes made between kozo paper and kazinoki paper, but the finished paper is almost indistinguishable from the original. It has been the main form of Japanese paper since ancient times, and documents indicate that it was used along with hemp paper for copying sutras during the Nara and Heian periods. 〈かじがみ〉ともいい,楮紙(こうぞがみ)(〈ちょし〉ともいう)の古名。製紙原料であるクワ科のカジノキBroussonetia papyrifera(榖(かじ),構(かじ)とも)はコウゾB.kazinoki(楮)とは近縁ではあるが別種の植物なので,榖紙と楮紙を区別することもあるが,すきあがった紙はほとんど判別できない。古来主要な和紙であり,奈良・平安時代には麻紙とともに写経などに用いられたことが文献にみられる。
