Zosterophyllum

Japanese: ゾステロフィルム（英語表記）Zosterophyllum

It is one of the oldest land plants, probably belonging to the Archaeophyceae. It has been discovered in the Middle Devonian of Germany, the Lower Devonian of Belgium, the Devonian of Australia, and more recently in the Lower Devonian of China. The plant is small and leafless, consisting of a thin stem that branches many times in a Y shape, and grows to a height of about 10 cm. The stem clearly has vascular bundles, but it is believed that most of it sank to the bottom of shallow water, and that spike-like sporangia protruded above the water surface from the tip of the stem.

おそらく古生マツバラン綱に属すると考えられている最古の陸上植物の一つ。ドイツの中部デボン系，ベルギーの下部デボン系，オーストラリアのデボン系などから発見され，最近では中国の下部デボン系からも発見された。　植物体は小型で葉がなく，Y字形に何回も分枝する細い茎からなり，高さは10cmほどになる。茎には明らかに維管束があるが，その大部分は浅い水底に沈み，茎の先端から穂状の胞子囊穂（ほうしのうすい）を水面上に出していたものと推定されている。
