Japanese: 葛生動物群 - くずうどうぶつぐん

A general term for a group of fossil vertebrates found in the sediments of fissures in limestone near Kuzu-machi, Aso-gun, Tochigi Prefecture, which corresponds to the Quaternary Pleistocene in geological age. According to Tokio Shikamata, it is divided into three layers: upper, middle, and lower (1949). The upper layer contains 35 genera and 58 species, 50% of which are extinct, such as the Japanese shrew, the Japanese mole rat, the Siberian vole, the Tanaka bear, the leopard, the tiger, the Yabe deer, and the Naumann's elephant. Similar fossil faunas are known from sediments in fissures in limestone areas such as Shiraiwa in Hamakita City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Tadaki in Mikkabi Town, Inasa District, Cape Shiriya in Aomori Prefecture, Ushikawa northeast of Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, and Isa in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

栃木県安蘇郡葛生町付近の石灰岩の割れ目の堆積物に含まれる化石脊椎動物群の総称で，地質時代では第四紀更新世にあたる。鹿間時夫によれば，上，中，下の3層準のものに区分される(1949)。上部は，シカマトガリネズミ，ニホンモグラジネズミ，タイリクヤチネズミ，タイリクハタネズミ，タナカグマ，ヒョウ，トラ，ヤベオオツノシカ，ナウマンゾウなど35属58種，その50％が絶滅種である。同様な化石動物群は，静岡県浜北市の白岩や引佐郡三ヶ日町の只木，青森県の尻屋崎，愛知県豊橋市北東の牛川，山口県の伊佐など，石灰岩地帯の割れ目の堆積物から知られている。
