Also known as infusoria. A phylum of protozoa. The body surface is covered with cilia and has a macronucleus involved in metabolism and a micronucleus involved in reproduction. They are widely distributed in seawater and freshwater, and many are free-living, but some are parasitic. Examples include Paramecium, Vorticella, and Stentor.
